This sculpture represents the struggle to reunite Korea (thereby plunging both sides into darkness?). The two halves are actually fairly detailed.

The sculpture lives at the site of the Third Infiltration Tunnel, which I am seen here looking a bit tired from hiking back out of. The infiltration tunnels were dug by North Korea after the armistice as a means of invading the South. This particular tunnel would have put their armies very close to Seoul, had they completed it undetected. Of course, North Korea denies the tunnels, originally claiming that the tunnels were dug by South Korea and then claiming that they were simply mining tunnels.

Note also my observation of the strict dress code policy that is enforced for tours of the DMZ from South Korea. Interestingly, reports from westerners who have taken the North Korean DMZ tour (yes, there is one, and there are occassional tourists who manage to go on it) indicate that they have no such dress code. However, supposedly the reason for the dress code is that North Korean DMZ guards are known to photograph tour groups and use the photos as propaganda if they contain anything inappropriate. I guess they don't have to worry about the opposite occuring...
